Carpenters Union endorses Tom Bakk for Governor
May 15, 2009 – The North Central States Regional Council of Carpenters announces its endorsement of Senator Tom Bakk in the 2010 race for Minnesota Governor.
Bakk, who was elected to the Minnesota State Senate in November 2002, was a journeyman carpenter for 11 years and led Local Union 606 from 1987 until he retired in December 2008. He served in the Minnesota House of Representatives for four terms and was elected by his colleagues to chair the Senate Tax Committee in 2006.
“We couldn’t ask for a better candidate for Governor than Tom Bakk,” said Kyle Makarios, political director for the Regional Council. “Tom is a highly respected and influential State senator who leads the charge on many of our issues at the Capitol. He’s a warrior on legislation creating jobs, cracking down on the illegal cash economy, protecting jobsite safety, strengthening apprenticeship programs and keeping prevailing wage laws strong.
“Tom has been a union carpenter for 34 years,” Makarios continued. “Can you imagine having a Governor who really understands what it’s like to work for a living?”
The North Central States Regional Council of Carpenters represents 20,000 Union Carpenters, Floor Coverers, Lathers, Millwrights and Pile Drivers in North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin. The Regional Council is part of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America.
