Press Release: Pick an Excuse, Any Excuse

Governor Pawlenty and the “Party of No” Republicans will find any excuse to oppose health-insurance reform, but have no ideas of their own

St. Paul (October 28, 2009) — The DFL Party released this statement from Chair Brian Melendez on the Republican officials’ “Party of No” mentality and devotion to obstructionism on health-insurance reform:

“When it comes to health reform, Minnesota Republicans are devoted to one thing and one thing only: obstruction. First, Governor Pawlenty wanted to opt out of health-care reform — now, the opt-out plan being considered in Congress isn’t good enough. Meanwhile, Republican representatives in Congress find a way to throw up roadblocks at every turn, and the only consistent thing about their failed arguments is blind opposition. Enough is enough. Minnesotans need leaders, not public figureheads parroting the ‘Party of No’s’ obstructionist talking points.”

After initially supporting the concept, Governor Pawlenty now calls the opt-out a sham. “They flirted with the idea of a trigger. Now they’re floating the idea of an opt-out… But I think it’s a sucker’s play. I think it’s a sham. And they’re going to maybe get the votes to do it, but it’s really not going to be an opt-out for all the reasons we discussed earlier.” [Fox News, On the Record, 10/27/09]

Minnesota’s Republicans in Congress are united in opposition against health reform. “Meanwhile, the three Republicans in the delegation, John Kline, Erik Paulsen and Michele Bachmann, all say they don’t support any of the health care proposals currently being considered.” [MPR, 10/27/09]

  1. Tim Johnson Says:

This press release is blatantly dishonest. The character behind this item is the same character behind the Democrat’s hc circus in DC that the governor rightly calls a sham. It’s not just Republicans opposed to the more radical proposals, but moderate Democrats as well. The Republicans DO have their own proposals, but since they don’t involve handing tyrannical control of 1/6 of our economy to the Democrats they are ignored. They haven’t even been given decent participation in the debate.

Ms. Sosanie, you might want to get your facts straight before you start flinging mud.
