Press Release: DFL In DC For Job-Killing Summit

St. Paul- Republican Party of Minnesota Chairman Tony Sutton today issued the following statement regarding the Washington, D.C. visit of DFL lawmakers Sen. Ellen Anderson and Reps. Jeremy Kalin and Kate Knuth to promote job-killing cap and trade legislation.

“Rather than promoting job-killing cap and trade legislation in Washington, DFL legislators Ellen Anderson, Jeremy Kalin and Kate Knuth should be focused on ways to improve Minnesota’s economy without harming our state with a massive new energy tax.  This Democrat cap and trade scheme will cause energy bills to skyrocket for our state’s families and businesses.  Today’s cap and trade photo-op can’t change the fact that this onerous new energy tax is wrong for Minnesota.”

Three DFL Lawmakers In DC To Promote Job-Killing Cap & Trade Legislation

“Three state lawmakers from Minnesota are bringing their ideas for climate legislation to Washington, D.C.  Sen. Ellen Anderson and Reps. Jeremy Kalin and Kate Knuth visit the White House today with about 40 other state lawmakers. They are talking with members of President Barack Obama’s administration about legislation that would cap greenhouse gas pollution and reduce emissions. …  Anderson, Kalin and Knuth will meet with the state’s congressional delegation Thursday.”  (“Minnesota lawmakers offer ideas for climate bill,” Associated Press, October 28, 2009)

Cap & Trade: Wrong For Minnesota

Minnesota Farm Bureau: Cap & Trade Tax Will Cost Farmers. “The Minnesota Farm Bureau is against implementing a cap-and-trade system because questions remain unanswered about how much it would cost farmers. Staci Bohlen, national issues director for the Minnesota Farm Bureau, is concerned about conflicting estimates of the costs of a cap-and-trade system.”      (Charley Shaw, “Minnesota farmers are skeptical about cap-and-trade proposals,” St. Paul Legal Ledger, August  6, 2009)

Minnesota Corn Growers: Cap & Trade A Threat. “Doug Albin, president of the Minnesota Corn Growers Association, said the cap-and-trade system could be a threat to America’s food supply. He’s worried farmers in Minnesota and elsewhere will have to resort to offsetting carbon rather than producing food.”  (Charley Shaw, “Minnesota farmers are skeptical about cap-and-trade proposals,” St. Paul Legal Ledger, August  6, 2009)

Minnesota Rural Electric Association:  Cap & Trade Hurts Minnesota. “Mark Glaess, general manager of the Minnesota Rural Electric Association, opposes a cap-and-trade system. He said that Minnesota moved to coal because of the nuclear plant construction ban and as a result of that move has enjoyed low electricity costs. But a cap-and-trade system like the one under consideration in Congress would hurt states like Minnesota that use a lot of coal to make energy. ”   (Charley Shaw, “Minnesota farmers are skeptical about cap-and-trade proposals,” St. Paul Legal Ledger, August  6, 2009)

Congressman John Dingell (D-MI) Admits: Cap & Trade Is “Great Big” Tax. “Nobody in this country realizes that cap and trade is a tax.  And it’s a great big one.” (Rep. John Dingell, House Energy and Commerce Committee and House Science Committee, Joint Hearing, April 24, 2009)

Brookings Institute:  Cap & Trade Will Cause Job Losses. “A report issued by the left-leaning research organization said that if Congress passes something similar to President Obama’s or the House’s proposed plan, the economy would take the biggest hit around 2025. … the net job loss would be 0.5 percent over the first 10 years that the legislation is in effect.” (Amanda DeBard, “Study: Cap And Trade Would Hurt Economy,” The Washington Times, June 9, 2009)
