Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter’s grandson recently shared an update about his grandfather’s health as he gets ready to celebrate his 100th birthday. Jason Carter talked about this during a music event honoring Jimmy.

As Jimmy Carter approaches his amazing milestone on October 1, Jason gave some insights into how his grandad is doing. This update comes after Jason mentioned that Jimmy is receiving hospice care in his hometown of Plains, Georgia.

Jason shared, “He’s been in hospice for over 19 months now and has really physically diminished, but he is emotionally engaged and still having experiences, laughing, and loving.” He added, “[He’s] experiencing the world as best as he can as he continues through this process.”

Jason emphasized that while Jimmy is emotionally engaged, there hasn’t been much change in his health after several months in hospice care. He also shared that when his grandfather first entered hospice, the family believed it would only be days before he passed. However, he reflected, “God had other plans.”

Before speaking with People, Jason talked to Southern Living about his grandad’s health. He mentioned that Jimmy isn’t awake every day, and even though family visits him regularly, they can’t predict how he’ll be feeling during those visits.

As noted earlier, Jason’s latest updates about his grandfather came during Jimmy’s 100th birthday celebration on September 17 at Atlanta’s historic Fox Theatre.

The music event was announced on the Carter Center website on August 1, 2024, and promised amazing performances from famous musical acts like Chuck Leavell, D-Nice, Drive-By Truckers, Eric Church, and The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chamber Chorus, among others.

About the event, which was open to the public, Jason shared, “Whether it was on his record player, during the campaign, or on the White House lawn, music has always been a source of joy, comfort, and inspiration for my grandfather. I can’t think of a better way to celebrate him and his 100th birthday than with a night of music.”
