The head of the American Democrats, Nancy Pelosi, has announced that she is stepping down, the Washington Post reported.
For the past four years, Pelosi has served as Speaker of the House of Representatives.
“I will not seek re-election to the leadership position. The time has come for a new generation to take over,” Pelosi announced.
She was a leading figure for the Democrats. She will continue to be a legislator.
New options for the post are expected to be announced soon. Candidates are being selected.
It is expected to hold a vote soon.
