It is the first time a US soldier has been killed by enemy fire in the Middle East since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas.
The attacked American post is located near the border with Syria. It is believed that the killing of the Americans will significantly escalate the conflict in the Middle East.
US Central Command confirmed that three service members were killed and 25 wounded in a one-way drone strike that “hit a base in northeastern Jordan”.
As of Friday, more than 158 strikes had been carried out against U.S. and coalition forces in Iraq and Syria, though officials described the constant barrage of drones, missiles, and projectiles as unsuccessful because they often did not cause serious injuries or damage to infrastructure.
It is not clear why air defenses failed to intercept the drone, which appears to be the first successful attack on a US post since attacks on US and coalition forces began on 17 October. US forces are there as part of an advise-and-assist mission with Jordan.
US officials have repeatedly stated that they do not want the growing tensions in the Middle East to escalate into a regional war.
In an address to mark the death of the military, US President Joe Biden laid the blame on groups that are backed by Iran.
