7.2% of Americans self-identify as LGBT

A total of 7.2% of adults in the United States identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and other (LGBT), according to a poll by the Gallup Institute.

By comparison, in 2012, when measurement of the LGBT share began, only 3.5% identified as something other than heterosexual or cisgender, i.e. those who self-identify as representatives of their biological sex.

Nearly 20% of Gen Z adults born between 1997 and 2004 identify as LGBT. This share is significantly lower among millennials born between 1981 and 1996. Only 3.3% of Gen Xers, born between 1965 and 1980, self-identify as such. The data was collected in telephone interviews involving over 10,000 people.
