The group of 30 Democratic congressmen who called on US President Joe Biden to negotiate with Russia to end the war in Ukraine withdrew their letter just hours after it was published. The head of the faction Pramila Jayapal explained that the letter was written several months ago and published without confirmation and verification.
We recall that the letter, signed by 30 Democrats from the Progressive Caucus in Congress, said they appreciated Biden’s commitment “to Ukraine’s legitimate struggle against Russia’s aggressive war” and recognized that US economic, military, and humanitarian aid is crucial to Kyiv’s success in the fight against Moscow. Liberal lawmakers say diplomatic efforts must also be part of the U.S. approach to ending the war, which has had devastating consequences for the Ukrainian people and threatens a global food and poverty crisis because of rising fuel and grain prices. “As lawmakers responsible for spending tens of billions of American taxpayer dollars on military aid to the conflict, we believe that such involvement in this war also creates a responsibility for the United States to seriously explore all possible avenues, including direct engagement with Russia, to reduce the damage and support Ukraine in reaching a peaceful solution,” the MPs wrote.
