Elon Musk didn’t hide his excitement as he watched votes pour in on a Twitter poll he launched asking whether to welcome Donald Trump back to the messaging platform. “Bring back former President Trump,” was the question the billionaire posted on Friday, allowing only a yes or no vote. As of around 15:00 GMT today, 52.3 percent of nearly 11 million responses were in favor of the former president’s return. 48% of respondents were against.
Trump was banned from Twitter for his role in last year’s attack on the US Capitol by a mob of his followers seeking to have the results of the 2020 election annulled. Musk said the poll was drawing millions of responses every hour one way or another.
“It’s fascinating to watch Trump’s Twitter poll!” Musk responded at the start of the poll. There were no signs, however, that the unconventional boss of SpaceX and Tesla would stick with the results of the special poll.
Elon Musk, who bought Twitter this October, has repeatedly promised to bring free speech back to the platform. It has already managed to unblock the account of Kanye West, who was sanctioned for making inappropriate remarks about Jews, as well as a number of other accounts, including comedian Kathy Griffin, psychologist Jordan Peterson and the satirical magazine Babylon Bi.
Musk also took a number of controversial steps that caused a public outcry. He removed Twitter’s top management, fired many employees, and introduced a paid subscription for a “blue tick” that verifies the account. After that, more than a million users, dissatisfied with its policy, left the social network. Many famous people have also deleted their accounts, including model Gigi Hadid.
