A science experiment led to an explosion at a festival in Spain, 18 injured, including 10 children

An explosion at a science festival in northeastern Spain injured at least 18 people, including 10 children aged 3 to 13, DPA reported. Some of the injured are in serious condition.

The explosion occurred during a demonstration at the House of Culture in the Catalan city of Girona, about 100 kilometers northeast of Barcelona. The festival was organized by the local university.

During the experiment, a container of liquid nitrogen exploded in front of an audience of 200-300 people, most of them families with children. Most of the injured suffered from flying parts of the exploded metal container. There are no people with burns.

The condition of a 5-year-old girl is the worst. Together with four other people, two children and two adults, they were admitted to the hospital in Girona.

The case is being investigated by the Catalan police. A spokesman for the University of Girona said that this experiment had been done many other times without problems and it was not clear now why the serious incident occurred.
