US President Joe Biden described Florida’s changes to gender laws and attitudes as “close to sinful” and said Republican efforts to block transgender rights were “brutal”, reports the BBC. In an interview with The Daily Show, he said federal laws should be passed to prohibit states from restricting transgender rights.
It comes amid a surge in anti-transgender bills being debated in Republican-controlled US states. Supporters say new laws are needed to protect children and help parents.
“What’s going on in Florida is, as my mother would say, almost sinful. It’s just terrible what they’re doing,” Mr. Biden said in a clip released before the program aired, the BBC reported.
