China has announced its first death from COVID-19 in almost half a year

With it, the total number of victims of the pandemic in China becomes 5,227

China announced its first death from COVID-19 in almost half a year, the Associated Press reported, cited by BTA.

The death of an 87-year-old man from Beijing is the first death reported by health authorities since May 26. With it, the total number of victims of the pandemic in China becomes 5,227. The last death in China was reported in the city of Shanghai, where new cases of infection significantly increased during the summer.

Although over 92 percent of the Chinese population is vaccinated, the proportion among the elderly population, especially those over 80, is significantly lower. Health authorities did not specify whether the deceased Beijing resident had been immunized.

The death was registered against the background of the introduction of new strict anti-epidemic measures in the capital and throughout the country.
