La Repubblica with sensational news about Ursula von der Leyen and NATO

Von der Leyen's trip to Canada and the US should be seen in the context of a possible promotion of her candidacy for the post of Secretary General of the Alliance

The current President of the European Commission (EC), Ursula von der Leyen, will run for NATO Secretary General, reports the Italian newspaper La Repubblica. This will happen, provided that she is not re-elected to the EC.

Preparations for her candidacy began a few months ago, the publication reports. Von der Leyen’s trip to Canada and the US should be seen in the context of a possible promotion of her candidacy for the post of NATO Secretary General.

In July, during the summit of the Alliance, an attempt will be made to extend the mandate of Jens Stoltenberg, the current Secretary General of NATO, by another year.

According to La Repubblica, if Von der Leyen becomes the head of NATO, it would be “the ideal solution for the Americans, since the potential alternative candidates are not entirely convincing”.

The publication stated that her claims for the post “violate the scenarios that countries and parties have been building in recent months in the run-up to the 2024 elections.”

The President of the EC will leave for Ottawa on March 7, and the next day for Washington. She will meet US President Joe Biden. Cooperation in the field of environment and security, as well as the situation in Ukraine and issues of interaction with China will be discussed at the meeting.
