TERROR IN IRAN! Victims and hundreds injured after strong earthquake
At least three people died and hundreds were injured in the earthquake that rocked the northwestern part of Iran last night, reports the IRNA agency, quoted by DPA.
Many buildings in dozens of cities were damaged, and over 440 people were injured, the agency said.
The quake occurred at 9:44 p.m. local time in West Azerbaijan province, near the border with Turkey, according to data from the Iranian Seismological Center in Tehran.
The town of Hoi An was particularly hard hit, but tremors were also felt in other areas.
Earlier, Iranian media reported two dead and 307 injured as a result of the earthquake that shook the Iranian province of West Azerbaijan.
The Iranian seismological center in Tehran determined its magnitude at 5.9 and its depth at 7 kilometers. According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center, the earthquake had a magnitude of 5.7 and a depth of 43 kilometers.
The tremor was felt in many areas of West Azerbaijan province, causing concern among residents, as well as in several cities in neighboring East Azerbaijan province, including the main city of Tabriz.
Its epicenter was 23 km southeast of the city of Hoi An, home to 175,000 people.
According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center, the earthquake was also felt in Turkey, Iraq, Armenia, and the Republic of Azerbaijan.
At least 120 people were injured in another earthquake in northwestern Iran last week, DPA reports.
