The US has guaranteed continued defense support for Ukraine

Joe Biden said he had a phone conversation with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday

US President Joe Biden said he had a phone conversation with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday, and “welcomed Zelensky’s declared openness to a just world based on the fundamental principles of the UN Charter.” Biden reiterated his commitment to providing Ukraine with economic, humanitarian, and security aid and “to hold Russia accountable”, reports TASS.

The American president, according to the White House press office, emphasized “the continued support of the United States for the defense of Ukraine” against the background of the strikes “on the critical infrastructure of Ukraine.” The president noted that the United States is prioritizing efforts to strengthen Ukraine’s air defenses through security assistance, including the Dec. 9 announcement of $275 million in additional munitions and equipment, including systems to counter unmanned aerial vehicles used by Russia. “President Biden also noted that the United States announced on November 29 that it would provide $53 million to support Ukraine’s energy infrastructure,” Focus Agency reported.

Zelensky, in his Telegram channel after the conversation, claimed that he had coordinated his positions with Biden before the G-7 online meeting, which, according to him, “will take place today” and in which “Ukraine will take part.” He added that “in the conversation, I heard that the ‘peace formula’ proposed by Ukraine is perceived positively”. The plan, first presented by Zelensky on November 15 during a video address to the G20 summit in Bali, includes guaranteeing nuclear, food, and energy security, an all-for-all “detainee” exchange, and the withdrawal of Russian troops and restoring Ukraine’s territorial integrity. According to Zelensky’s website, the presidents discussed “the formation of effective air defenses and the protection of critical infrastructure,” as well as the restoration of the energy system.
